I noticed the word “earth” in your reading. That the whole earth is corrupt and God will “destroy them ALONG WITH THE EARTH.” Interesting. Did God do this or not? Clearly God sees humanity as deeply a part of earth, not merely creatures who live upon it.
Don’t know what to make of this, but it is what I heard new today.
On a more intentional note, fine carrying of God’s grief in your voice.

    • Thanks, Phil! Your comment makes me wonder again about the fact that along with the people, God includes the animals (who presumably aren’t having the evil imaginations of the heart)…along with the earth.

Taking on this story was a good experience for me–I have never connected well with the covenant reached at the end because of my inability to understand how God would choose such a path. Getting to tell it in full, in light of what I was reading in Brueggeman’s volume from the Interpretation series, was a powerful experience. Now I feel like I’m just getting started on the story!
